To tank or not to tank?

Throughout sports history there have been champions in every category, NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB. The question that remains is what have these teams done to withstand success as well as gain a championship caliber resume in the process. If teams such as the New England Patriots are an example then you only need to get one lucky draft pick by the name of Tom Brady and a great football minded coach like Bill Belicheck to dominate a decade of football.

For the Dallas Mavericks this caliber of success has been few and far between since Mark Cuban bought the team in 1998. With the exception of Dirk Nowitzki being the mainstay of the franchise the Mavericks draft history has been a bust along with many failed international projects and role players such as Rodrigus Beaubouis, Shane Larkin, and Justin Anderson.

The T word was raised a couple weeks back from the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, saying "Tanking is our best option." While often these thoughts are said behind closed doors, very rarely if ever are they to be spoke out in public which drew a fine from NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

While tanking can draw a high draft pick for a team in hopes of returning to prominence, It can also work out horribly and that is the question for the Mavericks is will this make them become a contender again? with the likes of Dennis Smith Jr. already producing at a high level then there is hope on the horizon, yet speculation is just that, speculation. Every draft pick can be a bust regardless of how they end up in college, an example of this would be Adam Morrison at Gonzaga, yes he may have been the highest scorer in collegiate history yet look how he turned out for the Charlotte Bobcats.

Sitting at 19-42 with the third worst record in the NBA, the Mavericks in season futility will allow them to draft high this June, It remains to be seen if that draft pick will turn around the franchise.
